The boots seem formal enough to _me_, in that they were polished for dress uniform wear, but then I'd hardly care to use them for trampling over tradition.

I think combat boots with an otherwise formal getup would look very, very strange even on the funkiest guy. I always wear boots if I'm dressed up, but dressing up for me doesn't go any fancier than a vest and tie, and I'm covered in tattoos and have really long dreadlocks. I think a more traditional choice in footwear will look a lot better in this case.
