Thanks to all that contributed advice and knowledge...
I have finished altering my Mackenzie (old colors) kilt. Added in canvas, closed the left strap hole and moved the strap and buckle inside the apron. Also made the front apron symmetrical. Fits much better now, and should last a long time... there is hardly any distortion of the tartan at the buckle / strap locarions.
It has been a long road, but thanks to people here it came out well!
