A few years ago I saw a snuff mull for sale on Ebay. It had been given to the officer's mess by Lt Col Henry Mathias in 1894. He was known as the "Hero of Dargai" leading the regiment in one of its most renowned battles.
Deeming this to be to historic to remain in private hands, I paid up and received it. Finding a home proved more difficult. I managed to contact someone at the Highlanders (4th Battalion RHR), but they declined.
The Gordon Highlanders Museum in Aberdeen did accept the mull cor their collection and I sent it to them. The museum will loan out historic mess silver to the 4th Battalion; I hope that the mull is present at some of their Dargai Nights - celebrated on October 20.
