In my unending quest to expose my deep, deep ignorance of all things tartan, I post thusly:

So I'm skipping merrily through kiltstore.net's tartan database, and I click "all universal tartans."

http://kiltstore.net/tartanfinder.html?disp=universal

There Buchanan is, listed as a universal tartan. Why is this? Buchanan is a family name, isn't it? What gives?

Furthermore, why Lindsay, Gordon, and MacKenzie? I understand that for many, Stewart is now regarded as universal/appropriate for anyone, but why? How does a family tartan become regarded as universal?

Riddled with curiousity,
