The Span-Am leggings were made of canvas, and very practical -- they do keep dirt, rocks, critters, etc. from getting in your boots or up your trouser-leg. Not to mention the "panache" they give the uniform.

Its great to see another reenactor here! I'm involved in WW2 Canadian myself.

back on topic:
Spats shouldnt be just used for pipe bands, I think they look really good especially when in full formal attire.
