Burns Cabaret In Coquitlam, BC

This past Saturday night was the 4th annual Burn's Cabaret at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam, BC http://www.evergreenculturalcentre.c...ge/default.htm . This was my second year attending, and a fun night it was. There was lots of Burns poetry, song, and history. The Haggis was piped in and addressed, and music for the evening was provided by a band called Blackthorn http://www.blackthornband.com/ (not sure why there are so many bands called Blackthorn out there).
As you can see from the picture above I wore my Watson Ancient kilt and charcoal tweed jacket/ waistcoat from scottishkilt.net. I was very well received and had many requests for pictures.
Now the sad part....there were only 6 people there in kilts! The MC, the piper, the gentleman that said the Selkirk Grace, two band members, and your truly. This was the second year that I was the only person, not involved in the show, wearing a kilt. Isn't this supposed to be a celebration of Scotland's greatest bard and all things Scottish? Apparently to celebrate your Scottish heritage around her you dig out your nicest plaid shirt, which wouldn't be so bad if it were not matched with patterned ties. This was the second year that this was the case. Heck, I even got the "whatcha got under there question from a guy outside on a smoke break". I lambasted him for asking such a stupid question at a Scottish event. Ah well maybe I inspired someone to take action and get a kilt for next year.
All in all the event was fun, the haggis was good, the whisky sucked (Glennfiddich)......but my flask of Laphroaig was good, the company was great, and the money won at a poker game at the end of the night was fun too.
I must add that this was the first time I have worn my traditional for an extended period of time. The high waist took alot of getting used to (learning to sit again ) but I have fallen in love with the traditional kilts and will have to be very hard pressed to buy another casual kilt when there are so many great quality wool traditionals now on my list.
