I think there is another point-a few years ago he almost certainly would not have worn highland dress-be it correct or otherwise. Too the average person will just see a chap in a kilt, and a famous one at that.

The effect is to slightly enhance the public perception of the kilt as an acceptable garment to wear.

So in the end it makes it easier for all of us to wear the kilt when going about our day to day activities-wear it for as special occasion or whatever.
