Eh- Accents are problematic going from written to spoken- and you might be getting the equivalent of 'hearing' a Boston accent and thinking it's an 'American' one.
Still, there's a really good book on English speakers and their accents- a trilogy, really. It's called Accents of English. The second one deals mostly with the British Isles and Ireland.
