I have known him since 1968 and I knew what that meant - he HATES discussing sensitive topics through email for just that reason - he kids around, I take him seriously, and it's downhill from there. 
A failed friendship is often the result of a breakdown in communications. Ones choice in attire usually isn't, unless the friend is shallow.
I hope you can fix it. I'm guessing that after 38 years, it's not going to end over this.
