You may be familiar with the story of Black Jack Davy? Ballads tell of a young married woman who falls in love with a gypsy outlaw and gives up her title, wealth, station and family to travel with Davy. Her husband pursues her, and when he catches up with her, she says, in effect, that she would rather have a short live living as an outlaw with a real man than live a long, prosperous life with her husband.
