The jacket looks god. Instead of worrying about creating patch pockets I would advise you to just sew the slash pockets shut. Take a small amount of the extra material and creat flaps for the pockets. Sew them above the closed slashed pockets so the bottom of the flap covers the closed pocket opening. This "moves" the pockets up. See what the tailor did on mine:
