Stillwater Saffron
I'll start this review now but I'll have to add to it once I get the kilt home and remove the stitches and press the shipping wrinkels out but for now I'll share my initial thoughts. As a gauge of where I'm drawing my opinions an experience, I own:
Previously owned a UK Survival
1- Sportkilt (Navy Stewart)
1- PK (Woodland MarPat)
1- USAK (Gordon Modern pleated to stripe)
soon to have another USAK in Fraser Hunting pleated to the red stripe
This is my first traditional styled kilt.
The weight is comparable to that of my UK Survival with the cargo pockets attached, but probably a bit heavier.
The Saffron color is awesome. I was concerned about it being too orange but it has a great brown shade in it. Georgia red clay is a similar color. It's a very nice earthy color. The shadow tartan in the cloth adds some bright highlights that I've not fully gotten to appreciate in natural light yet.
The construction is very solid. Nice tight stitches. I like that the buckel side of the straps, is made from matching material as the kilt so the only leather is the side with the holes in it. I will need to punch a slightly larger hole in the leather to allow for easier in and out of the pin. The pin also has a slightly sharp end so I think I'll file that down a tad to prevent gouges or pulls of the cloth. I never had one of the old standards that supposedly had flimsy buckels but these seem very solid. The selvedge appears very good.
Ovrall appearance. I strapped it on in the restroom at work as soon as I got a chance. Lots of pleats, good shape, shadow tartan is very cool. Having the kilt so far up my abdomine is something I will get used to.
So far this kilt was a great purchase. And since I caught it on Sale it was an awesome deal. 3 day shipping over the weekend is awesome service on top of everything else.
I'm sure I'll have more to share once I get the stitches loose and press out the wrinkels, but for now I highly suggest you grab these while they are on sale. And if you miss the sale still get one, it will be a great addition to your wardrobe options since you most likely won't find another kilt with this color in it.
