Star O' Rabbie Burns is the only Burns song sung at Burns suppers which was not penned by the bard himself. It was written by Hawick poet and songwriter James Thomson, whose statue is to be found here behind the premises of Hawick Burns Club. James Thomson lived from 1827 to 1888. The statue is at one end of the new James Thomson pedestrian footbridge which links the free car park at the Common Haugh with Drumlanrig's Tower; Tower Mill Heritage Centre and the new Genealogy Centre in the former corn exchange. Behind me is the town hall clock tower. James Thomson's statue looks out on this view of the point where the rivers Slitrig and Teviot meet. This view has only recently become possible with the opening of the new footbridge. The Albert Bridge over the River Teviot, with the Burns Club on the right.
