    Kilt Hangers

You all remember Blu's kilt hanger conversion project:

And his interesting Red Green kilt hanger:

This got me to thinking that there surely must be someone on this side of the Atlantic capable of fabricating a quality hanger for kilts. Rummaging around in the back of the closet I found several sturdy "Setwell" skirt and slack hangers, some of which are certainly over 25 years old. Haven't seen such a hanger for sale in many years. Might the company still be in business? Google came through and found http://setwellhangers.com/

Called and spoke with Jeff about a short run of kilt hangers. Could they make them with the thick wooden bars used for slacks (instead of the thin ones for skirts) in a 16 inch width? "Sure," he replied; they make them for people who want to hang up cloth (didn't ask why one would do that) and a short run was no problem. Here's what they look like:

The "space saver" hook arrangement allows for the kilts to be "stacked" to save some room in the closet.

Close-up of the hook and spring tension assembly.

Opposite side showing the pinch roller.

    Close-up of attaching points.

inside view of bar showing grip grooving.

Here are answers to some of your questions:

Are they sturdy and strong enough to hold a tank? Unfortunately I don't have a tank (yet) but a Stillwater standard is no problem.

Are they cove cut in the middle or bowed in at the ends to apply even pressure all the way to the tips? Nope - coving the 16 inch length would weaken it and bowing would be too expensive to manufacture. You could probably glue felt strips inside the ends if it's an issue. The flat surface could be a problem with Utilikilts and their thick belt loops - stagger the loops so they're not stacked on top of each other. Still, it seems to hold my UK without any problem.

Is it available in cedar? No - cedar is too weak for 16 inch lengths.

What's the price? These were $2.50 each. With handling and shipping via FexEd ground to California, it came to a few cents under $4.00 each.

Will you be selling or distributing these? Nope - I'll leave that to the professionals.

How can I order hangers? Send an e-mail to setcoinc@sbcglobal.net or call the phone number at the site linked above.
