By ignoring their taunts you clearly showed them that you are a WINNER. There are lots of sad, inadequate young men who are anxious whether they'll ever make it in life to get a decent job and a nice wife (heck I was one myself one day) and once they get into a group of three or four, safety in numbers makes them think they can act big by challenging an individual, but all they really succeed in doing is drawing attention to their own inadequacies. A slightly more mature looking and confident man is an object of envy and makes easy pickings for their taunts when they are in a group. They hope they will drag you down to their level by provoking a reaction. Really the kilt was just an excuse and there is every likelihood that you would have been taunted by them anyway even if you hadn't been kilted. I've had a couple of similar encounters when I was in my twenties, long before I was ever kilted.
