With my kilt, I wear my Docs, laced to the top. Remember, the laces should go horizontally, not x pattern. (I was shown this on Oxford Street, London UK when I bought these back in '91).
For more casual attire, I wear Blundstones. I have been wearing them daily for five or six years, and steel-toe for work for three years. The Blunnies are less dressy than the Docs, but more comfortable.
Both are great for dancing, drinking, and general carousing.
