step by step fringed tartan garter ties
Since Splash4 asked, and the instructions I wrote while trying to dash off to class were oop: Here's my attempt at good directions for making garter ties.
1. cut a strip 4" wide and in a length of 2x your leg circumfrence, plus 10-12" (depending on how long you want the ends to hang), placing the color you want in the center. I selected a blue stripe. (Trust me, it may be hard to see, but it's there.)
2. pin and sew along the length of the tube staying 3" in from the ends using a machine straight stitch, like so:
3. Turn the tube inside out ( so that the stitch you just sewed is now on the inside) and sew 3" from the end using a machine double overcast stitch:
4. tuck the double overcast stitch up inside the tube, making sure that the garter is flat, not bunched, and secure with a machine straight stitch. It should come out looking like this:
5. pull out the horizontal threads to make the fringe. I find that an old wire hairbrush (like one of these: )helps. It should look like this:
Once you've fringed both ends, you have yourself a garter tie! I hope these instructions are clear enough, I'm not used to writing instructions.
