Given that the jackets everyone seems to be interested in here are basic men's jackets and vests that are shorter in the waist with a sporran cutaway, I don't see why you just don't pop down to your friendly neighborhood department store and buy a jacket and vest (Target was selling them a couple of months back even) and pay the $50 to have them shortened. With the jackets I have had modified a major part of the cost of the alteration was having the epaulettes added. Since a lot of you don't want them anyway it makes the whole new regular jacket and conversion an even better deal. I personally want a charcoal Argyle with a vest because of the epaulettes and gauntlet cuffs and pocket flaps. If I wanted a simple jacket I wouldn't spend the extra money just to have an official "kilt jacket" (since nobody else would be able to tell anyway).
It seems the easiest way to get what you want and you have a lot of choices in terms of the fit / style / color of the jacket.
Just my two cents.
Cheers
