I always assumed the open hand in the Lamont crest was for their past ancestry to the O'Neil Clan of Northern ireland and the Red Hand of Ulster ???
did all these clan chiefs sit around trying to out do their neighbors with the best Crest (today's best mown lawn of the neighborhood?)
