How I celebrated the reeal of the Proscription Act
And I must say it was an appropriate weekend to be re-enacting Cornwallis' occupation of Williamsburg, VA, the colonial capital of Virginia. Portrayed a private in the Grenadier Company of 42nd Regiment of Foot, The Royal Highlanders. For the public it was not only educational but also entertaining. They learned, 1) it's a kilt not a skirt, 2) we are Scottish not English, 3) they are hose not socks, and 4) our hose and our shoes, ma'am. And finally, the Scottish lads beat the Welsh in the tug o'war.
For you history buffs, yes I know the 42nd was not in Williamsburg - but the more Bitish troops to occuppy the town the better. And we did explain that to the visitors.
PS - If you ever wonder why the British gave up and signed a treaty, just dress out in an 18th century uniform in Virginia in the summer. The kilt and hose were by far the most comfortable clothing in the heat and humdity. The regular units in their trousers and leggings must have been dying.
