So...this is the Scottish equivalent of "Planting A Tree In Israel"?
I wish that it was possible to count on any of these projects in the Third World being of genuine benefit to the locals without graft and corruption by the local governments and middlemen. Please let this one be unaffected by such problems. Unabashed tree-hugger here...there ought to be some of these small changes that require some small sacrifices from some of the parties involved but, in the end, create benefits for everyone. It doesn't take much.
I really hope that it succeeds and they ought to put up a booth at every Highland Game and everybody should put at least the equivalent of the price of one pint in the kitty to plant more wood.
As to the origin of the pipes...I have a friend who's a volleyball coach who has a license plate frame that says, "Volleyball: invented by men, perfected by women." Thus: Bagpipes: invented by the Egyptians (?), perfected by the Scots.
