Star Trek XI
Rather than hijack Panache's earlier thread about the original Star Trek, I thought I'd start one on the new Star Trek movie.
I saw a picture of the movie Enterprise today, and the teaser. Some thoughts: for me, the Enterprise makes or breaks this movie. If they disrespect that lady, I will be seriously, terribly dissapointed. Now, of course, this ship is from 2245, twenty years before TOS and there were at least two refits between "The Cage" and the normal run Star Trek episodes, so if the old girl doesn't look exactly the same, I'll be dissapointed but more understanding.
The problem is, is this "reimagining" or reboot meant to basically undo everything from the original series? Is it starting over from a clean slate? That is what bothers me, the sort of "Oh, they would have done it this way in the 60s if they had had our technology" attitude. As La Forge said to Scotty in "Relics", just because something's old, doesn't mean you throw it away." As has been said elsewhere, even that prime example of retconning, "ST:Enterprise" didn't have the nerve to redesign the USS Defiant.
But, there is a silver lining. I was glad to hear Nimoy recite "Space, the final frontier..." in the trailer, and to hear Courage's excellent theme. It'll be interesting to see how things go.
