I have to say, you took a decision that I'm not sure I would have taken. But then you did bring up with your mum the issue I would have focussed on: why she was making promises to other people for you.
I have issues with my family about being kilted, which hurts. My immediate family, no less. Relatives further away have no problem, and what friends have seen my kilted are curious, but also do not pass judgement.
