Some years ago I heard on the radio of someone ringing around all the embassies of some large capital city, whilst live on air, asking what they would like for Christmas, and got the usual 'Peace on earth and goodwill to all men' responses, but at the British embassy a young man picked up the phone, was asked the question, and after a moment declared that some candied fruits would be very acceptable, thank you very much.

I hope he went a long way in the diplomatic service, that down to Earth sort of thinking is what is needed.

I think my own wishes for spare time are kilt related in a round about way - no more washing kilts at midnight, time to go over the less well finished off ones to tidy up the waistband, add the belt loops, maybe train someone to press pleats properly.

I could even make a start on the pile of fabric awaiting sewing into kilts, tunics, liners and the like.

However, somehow there seems to be a bit more time recently.

I have new curtains in the front room, something needing to be done for a long time. I have made good progress with a couple of knitted jerseys for myself too. I might even be able to start on some hose for myself, if I hand knit the feet and top I can do the leg on my knitting machine as that saves a lot of time.

However the place is rather dusty and unkept, the washing is getting dangerously high for an unshored pile, and there is washing up and shopping to do.

Oh yes, and dinner to find. Time to peer hopefully into the fridge for something suitable.
