I spit shine all of my hard leather shoes and boots for two reasons: (1) nothing completes an outfit like a well-polished pair of shoes, (2) it gives me an opportunity to examine the condition of my shoes-- laces, soles, heels, and stitching-- to make sure everything is in good shape. I just finished spit shining my ghillies about an hour ago-- using basically the same technique suggested by georgeblack7, and there was virtually no polish in any of the holes worth mentioning.
Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials.
