You may well be right in that there will always be a tendency by some individuals to rebel instinctively against convention, particularly if they feel that it should not apply to them by reason of their nationality, without truly examining their motive for doing so. I did, however, try to point out in an earlier post that such conventions were not exclusive to Great Britain or its aristocracy but were, in fact, fairly general throughout western Europe as well as the New World, both north and south. My relatives and I are about as far from aristocracy as it is possible to get without dragging our knuckles when we walk but that does not mean that we lack the ability to recognise and follow the conventions necessary to mix comfortably in any society without embarrassing either ourselves or those in whose company we find ourselves. It is a matter of self-respect fundamentally, and if you follow a different path, provided you do so knowingly, then that is your choice and you do so in the full knowledge of that. What this forum is trying, obviously woefully unsuccessfully, is to steer the unwary towards the path of righteousness which they may then stray from at their peril but in the full understanding of what they are doing.
