I think you should consider 16 oz. if you are purchasing a 5 yd. kilt. Given that Atlanta can get on the warm side, a 5 yd. would suit you well and can still be worn during the hotter months. In my opinion, the heavier weighted cloth makes a big difference in how the kilt wears.
I have a 13 oz. 8 yd. kilt which Rocky made for me and I love it, but honestly I wear my 5 yd. and casual kilts more frequently.
Cost can also be a factor.
