Kilt for camping... what to get next.
My better half has expressed a strong desire to do some camping this summer and even suggested all on her own that it seems that would be an activity best done kilted.
I currently own 2 SWK Standards. I'm planning on picking up at least 1 more kilt, probably 2. I'm happy with the look (and price) of the standards I have for everything from a walk in the park, to a night out at the pub to formal wear for my wedding.
I'm not sure how they'll hold up to camping, though. Iimagine they shouldn't be too bad, though for sitting by a fire, I imagine a heavyweight wool might be a better choice due to its tendency to not melt or burst into flame... I have no proof that my standards would do that, but I've heard things about PV fabrics doing so...
Cost is one factor in my decision. The SWK "Heavyweight Wool" seems like a good bargain... then again, I could get 2 Standards for the price of the heavyweight (more kilts is better, right?). I know all about the "breathability" differences between the PV and the wool, but I'm not so sure that's a big issue. Went for a 5 mile hike (ok, brisk walk) in my standard the other day and was plenty comfortable in 85º heat.
Another factor that needs to enter into this is the ability to wash them without sending them out to get them dry cleaned after camping in them... I know that ironing them may be a pain, but one of the first comments I got when out in my kilt was "ohmygod! it must cost you a fortune to have that cleaned!" Apparently, dry cleaners charge by the pleat for pleated skirts. Go figure.
Your thoughts are welcome. I'm particularly interested in the experiences of those who've had SWK standards and other PV kilts regarding ease of washing/pressing and the likely-hood that my man parts may be permanently disfigured by melting fabric.
