Hey McCleff,
The "Great Basin Humor" is that the sign "Next Gas 163 Miles" is in a little town that DOES NOT sell gas!! So your only choice is to risk it or turn around and go about 40 miles back to get more gas...and by the time you're back to the sign you've burned 80 miles worth....gotta love it.
On the way out I risked going on ahead...did turn off the air conditioner, reduce speed, and coast downhill a lot. Made it in to Tonopah okay. Coming back I tanked up to the brim in Tonopah before heading out across the Great Basin.
For those interested the brand new book on Mountain Meadows is titled Massacre At Mountain Meadows by Ronald W. Walker, Richard E. Turley, Jr. and Glen M. Leonard. I'm deep into it and it is very very good. All three of these guys had access to LDS records and have pieced a very complicated jigsaw puzzle together from very confusing times. They just lay out what they found. The appendix is 202 pages of footnotes documenting what they found.
What I'm enjoying about the book is the authors had no agenda...they're not trying to fault anyone or to show anyone innocent. It is an excellent study of how a lot of different factors can combine and create a horrible tragedy for all involved. A good read too.
Really a treat to be able to visit the site at the same time I'm reading the book.
