I was talking with my wife about my mid-life crisis, so to speak, and I told her that a lot of men buy convertibles, go after younger women, or buy a Harley-Davidson; but I, I have taken to kilts. It really is a second life for me. It is amazing how comfortable, and all the benefits that you discuss on here so often, and yet still not quite socially accepted as normal.
I had a kilt made for me 25 years ago for ceremonial occasions, but now own four with more on the way. One of the great experiences has been with Steve at Freedom Kilts--I just called to check on my newest kilt from Steve and he said it was being sewn as we spoke. So, I am going to Hawaii sans shorts/trousers, save for my bathing suit, and entirely kilted. A Hawaiian shirt actually looks damn good with a non-traditional kilt.
In Seattle, where I am stationed, I often get compliments about my kilt and often the question, "Is that a Utility Kilt?" I have to answer them politely and tell them it's a Freedom Kilt (although I do own one Utilikilt). I read in here about the acceptance of kilts throughout the country, but the people who have accepted, nah embraced, my kilt wearing is my lovely wife and kids. Even had dinner with my 15 yr old's girlfriend's family kilted--and he tolerated it!
Anyway, my mid-life crisis is not so critical when kilted. I hope to retire to my home in Bend, Oregon and be known as that kilted guy like so many of you have made reference to yourselves in life. Moreover, kilts have taken the sting out of the mid-life thoughts of mortality.
