A proud Scottish descendant who had studied up on the Clearances once told me how strange it was to see his fellow clan members returning to Scotland for clan gatherings and incidentally (he said 'unavoidably') to honour the descendants of lairds who had been responsible, and how despite his very real resentment he found himself doing the same thing- and yet that's the clan system and it seems it can't be divorced from it.
The photos are great. I recall being told that 'they' burned the roof beams confident in the fact the removed people could never return because a deforested Scotland could not provide new ones- a good reason to keep a few symbolic mature trees growing on each visible clearance site. I bet it would make quite a forest overall. Perhaps their descendants could raise the issue with the lairds!
