You've got to love "tauntingly bleating like sheep at less authentic units." I can see Stephen Fry right now, as (General Melchett) saying m- Baaaahhhh.

There is at least one documented story of it being done during the War, when the 1st Missouri Brigade (CS) was issued undeyed jeans wool uniforms in 1862 -- reportedly they were bleated at by other Confederate soldiers.
