I'm not a big fan of tassels hanging down the front of my sporan, aLthough all the sporrans I own have them in one form or another. I've been curious about them since I bought my first kilt. Can anyone tell me if they have ever had a function other than just decorative items?

On the one Turpin I own they do serve the purpose of drawing the mouth closed and tying it off as well as holding the flap down.
