Ran into this with food before. Sometimes the name has nothing to do with the food. French fries were from Belgium (though they do speak french) as far as I understand it made popular by WWII vets. Same as pizza.

Add: Pizza being made popular by vets, not that it's from Belgium. From what I've read it is a Mediterranean dish back in Greece as well as Italy.
