Actually, I suspect that it’s supposed to be a helmet, done with bad perspective. Note the wings (or wing), somewhat in the style of motorcar tailfins of the era.
There are just so many details of this artwork that are wrong! And the tartan is non-symmetrical – but then why even worry about the tartan when the kilt would float freely . . .
