    Feelin a little more secure

When my Lass measured me for a kilt we measured between fully relaxed & sucked in. Like most men of 50+ my natural waist is a little bigger than my hips, at 1 time it wasnt. When wearin the kilt if I suck in my gut it will drop the the ground.
Ive only been kilted 3 days if you count today. When I was out & about, I always felt if I coughed I would offer a free show. Today I dug out a ol "fat" belt. It only slightly smaller around the waist, but it does feel more stable.

    Questions
    Am I worrying needlessly?

Knotty I hope you measured 1 to 2 inches above your belly button. It is not your pants size! A wider belt may help but you don't want to suck it in too tight as it could spoil the fall of the kilt.
Try not to cough and in any case you are going to look way better than the kids today who tend to walk around thinking there waist is just an inch or so above there knees.
Lang may your lum reek and a wee mouse never leaves your cupboard with a tear in its eye.

Many don't wear a belt. However I always wear a belt for the reason you pointed out above. It does feel more secure.

I always wear a belt with my kilt because I find the sporran straps to be far more comfortable than a sporran belt[1].

[1] Alas, yes, this is a veiled reference to my unwanted girth.

I've always felt a belt looks better to define the transition from the kilt to the shirt rather than just the fabric stopping at the top. (Unless I'm in formal togs with a waistcoat when its not needed for that reason.)

I might suggest that if without a belt you feel a bit insecure the kilt might be A) a bit loose or B) just a bit too low on the waist.
