This seems to be a distinction between British and American shirts. I seem to remember reading that the pocket tended to make one "look like a shopkeeper". Most American shirts feature such a pocket. Despite looking "like a shopkeeper" I find them a handy place to park my eyeglasses...

The “no breast pockets” rule seems decidedly odd.
Ever since I was a schoolboy I have kept pens and various other oddments (nowadays credit cards and the like) in my shirt pockets.
I prefer a shirt with two pockets, button-down if I can get it that way.
Only one of my shirts is pocketless, and I bought it because I wanted the colour (red).
    Regards,
    Mike
