    Summer Drinks

For me, my favorite summer drink is Gin and Tonic with a slice of lime.

I'm a brewer, so I usually go to to beer for comfort. I've been drinking IPA's from Magic Hat and Southern Tier. My own stuff currently includes a raspberry hefe and some low alcohol brown ale I made up (who said beer has to be "lite" to be good in the summer!)

for hard liquor, I love me some Gin Rickey...

Iced Tea. Or, as it's pronounced here,, Aaahed Tay. Or, if you're really a southerner, Sweet Tea, pronounced saweight tay.

Something I picked up in Germany is a Radler. A 50/50 mix of beer and lemon-lime soda. Another favorite for warm weather is Lynchburg Lemonade.

This topic reminds me of a song I sang way back in my past youth.
It was one of my favourites and I was partial to the version sung by the Dubliners.

    (S. McGrath)

The French drink wine, the English tea.
The Yankee drinks his hot black coffee.
The child drinks milk nine times a day.
The Scotsman sips his whiskey toddy.

You can keep you wine and keep your tea!
My curse on him that brings me coffee!
I'll drink porter, if I may.
It makes me feel content and happy.

Porter quaffed down with a laugh.
The gentry have their aching livers.
Water is all right in tea,
For fish, and things that swim in rivers.

The poor man and the beggar, too,
The poet in the corner thinking.
If they'd money enough to spend,
It's pints of porter they'd be drinking.

Porter quaffed down with a laugh.
The gentry have their aching livers.
Water is all right in tea,
For fish, and things that swim in rivers.

The miser hoards and stores his gold.
The bee collects the summer honey.
When that miser's dead and cold,
Someone else will kiss his money!

Porter quaffed down with a laugh.
The gentry have their aching livers.
Water is all right in tea,
For fish, and things that swim in rivers.

Some go in for counting beads.
More go in for chasing women.
The scholar stays at home and reads.
Give me the glass with porter in it.

Porter quaffed down with a laugh.
The gentry have their aching livers.
Water is all right in tea,
For fish, and things that swim in rivers.

I like "Smurf in a blender" Equal parts vodka, blue caracoa, creme de menthe combined with a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream and a touch of sprite. Blend well and enjoy.

In Osnabrück (Germany), a place where I hugely enjoyed wasting most of my mid to late 20's, a "Radler" is a beer and Coke. A beer and lemonade (7up) is known as an "Alster" or "Alsterwasser". An Altbier (dark beer) and Coke is known as a "Krefelder" and a Altbier and Lemonade is called "Altbier mit sprite" oder ein "Altbier Alster". Unsurprisingly, to try and be clever and call it an "Altster" just baffles the locals. In fact come to think of it, If you're British, to ask for an Alster in the first place confuses the locals!

    int:

There was another fantastic drink that we used to partake in for a laugh called an "Altbier Bowle" which is a 0.3cl Altbier with half a tin of sliced peaches chucked in it. Officially a ladies drink but we used to sup it for the novelty value. (you need a wooden kebab skewer, drinking straw and a paper umbrella for the full effect). Ahhhh... memories!

I appreciate different German places have different names but eitherway... enjoy!

Speaking of beer mixes. You might want to try a "snake-bite". A 50/50 mix of beer and cider (Magner's will do). Don't worry if it goes cloudy or looks curdled (if you're using British style Bitter rather than Lager beer it tends to do this) It's still perfectly drinkable. Though I would advise writing off the whole afternoon if you plan on having more than one. Oh yeah, and chill down your tins first, that helps on the refreshing front.
