Everywhere I went people wanted to take their picture with me. On the great wall I was stopped constantly. At the famous portrait of Mao at the entrance to the Forbidden City I started to get nervous, as the police began to take notice. I was not personally scared but I was worried for the Chinese people that they would not get hassled for having approached me. At the Terracotta warriors a group of elderly men, part of Mao's cadre replete with the old jackets and hats approached me. I really wished I had pics, but there were communist officials around and I did not want to cause offense. I shook each of their hands though and said hello. I don't know what they were saying but the kilt got lots of attention.

I intend wearing a "cheappie" when I go back to Gambia at the end of the year. Due to the sand and the dust it is not worth taking an expensive kilt, it would get filthy in no time. As it is only about five yards it will be easier to wear in the heat too.

I will be there for St Andrew's day, Christmas, My Birthday, New Year and of course Burn's night. I think kilted will go down well and Gambia does have at least one pipe band the pipe major of which will be piping in the haggis at my friends pub on Burn's night.
