I have to apologize... I didn't get around to making my sporran. I got caught up in giving a belt-making demo, instead... and then I got suckered into helping repair a spinning wheel with leather parts. The leather looked to be about 100 years old, and was so rotten, I was amazed it still held as well as it did. SO- with all that in mind... I'll be working on my sporran this week, I think. ***Fingers crossed***

Excuses, excuses...
Seriously though, I'm quite looking forward to seeing it.

the flap and belt loop can be made as one piece
cut it out the flap with a long strip attached to it
the strip is then folded to make the loop
it is a very simple design and works well,
the only draw back to this style is that you can only get one sporran out of a lage deer hide ,which makes it pretty expensive.
the three piece body style allows at least two+ sporrans per hide
below is the same type flap and loop on a three piece sporran

What class of Highland Jacobite are you going for?
Common poor highlander, laird, clan chief, Jacobite commander (ex. Lord George Murray) ?
This might dictate how nice or intricate your geer is.

There! It's in progress. Happy?
So- I haven't got a deer hide to work with, so I'm using elk. I know it's not technically correct... but who's gonna know anyway?

What I've decided I'm going to do is to make a separate heart shaped flap, and use the heart I already have as a stiffener for the back, and then sewing the new heart shaped flap to the belt loop. That will make mine look more like the original.

I might be able to help with that one.
Do you have access to someone that can tan a hide and get it ready for you to work? If so, I can furnish a few deer hides by end of the year. I would be willing to get them if I could have one after tanned
***disclaimer, both family and friends have way too much time and land (KS) on their hands in which Deer hunting from stands on said land is overly used.***
I do not use said land or time for things like that, I get to work.
Seriously though, I do know a lot of people that hunt like madmen in Kansas and on any given year will produce about 7 hides. Those being close to me, I suspect others that I work with would chip in on the count too.

A very nice historicaly correct leather is German braintan sold by Crazy Crow Trading Post and others.
German Braintan is a fish oil taned elk that has been used in Europe for hundreds of years.
good leather to work ,strong, easy to sew, and has an unique old time texture
It has the same color and appearence as the original you are copying
