If you want a kilt that you can wear for thrashing about and not care, it's a good buy. If you want a kilt for sort of dress, going to the pub or out with the wife, I suggest moving up to at least the standard. There is a noticeable difference in quality and construction.

I love my thrifty and it still looks great after a 3 day bachelor party weekend. It still looks great. But yes, if you are going for any more formal occasion, I would suggest the next class up. However, I would wear my thrifty to my local pubs. They aren't too classy.

I have several of the SW Thrify kilts as well as too many other kilts...
I work in a [very hot] small engine shop, and I use the thrify kilts for comfort and to save my better kilts from being destroyed.
A thrifty kilt doesn't have the weight or feel of a more solid kilt and wind is much more of a problem than I'd care to admit, yet it is the most comfortable kilt* than I own.
I, like many of the others, would suggest that you upgrade to one of the standard kilts. The weight, feel and construction is worth it.
* I have my eyes set on one of those flannel comfort-kilts and I figure that will become my most comfortable kilt -- but I'll never wear it out of the house.

I wear a thrifty almost daily, but will not so much as take out the garbage in it, as far as public display goes. Great comfort, no worries and affordable, as long as you don't want to go any further beyond ultimate casual wear.

I got a Thrifty for one of my sons, and an Economy for the other (They didn't have a Thrifty in his size) so I'll let you know - they should be here by Mon.

It will do. The Thrifty lacks some extra pleat depth on each side of the apron, which actually makes these operations a little easier. (Edited to add) Normally the first pleat on the wearer's left is deeper ("the deep pleat"), and there is a box pleat to the right of the underapron ("the reverse pleat").
Each step up the scale---Economy, Standard---is a little nicer. All are good value, and will do fine for familiarization purposes.

it would work for this for sure, i have a stillwater standard kilt and its great, though i still have not yet perfected getting in my car. i always feel as though im crushing my pleats, even though they always look fine afterwards. to practice sitting down and not having your self exposed, try sitting in front of a full length mirror in different positions and chair types, i feel that doing that helped alot when figuring out if i was going to offend some one accidentally, even with underwear on.
