My advice is to go with the Standard. The Economy and Thrifty model don't hang well IMHO and might night be a good example for a trainer. The Standard provides an appropriate kilting experience and you will find that you wear it often as a casual kilt. I still wear my Saffron (Well....it doesn't fit anymore), but when it did, I sported it frequently out and about.

Honestly, for a "trainer" kilt, I would go with a Standard. It gives you a good idea of what a real kilt feels like. Thriftys... Well, not so much.

I myself own 7 Stillwater standards and 3 heavies and haven't had any problems at all with them in the 3 years I have been kilted full time and pants free..I myself would also advise going with a standard because they are heavier than the thrifty which is about the same weight as a sportkilt original. Which I do happen to own a sportkilt but it's only for around the house wear only.

I would like to add that I live in a big city and I would say 99% of people have never seen a kilt in person and have no idea what one should look like. That being said, to get the experience you may want to upgrade, but if you are concerned about looking a certain way, the thrifty IMHO does a decent job. It's a lot better than the majority of stuff I see at flogging molly concerts...ohmygosh, I am pretty sure half the guys "kilted" at flogging molly concerts bought theirs at kmart in the girls skirt section...lol

Last month, on a reasonably well researched whim, an order was placed with Stillwater for one each, "Thrifty," "Economy" and "Standard" kilts, for a total of about $180 including shipping.

Result; quite happy with all, thank you. In each instance, one receives precisely what one has paid for. Acrylic, made in Pakistan, of consistently climbing quality with price. Intent is to wear them mostly around home, seeing how they stand up and feel. And enjoying being oft-kilted.

This is being e-penned in black Economy kilt and and Hawaiian print shirt, with assistance of a bottle of Possman's Frankfurter Applewine (tart, dry German version of hard cider), listening to "Jazz Tropicale."

Therefore, re cheap Stillwaters, for non-serious being kilted wear, HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!
