If these became recognized and were stringent, visible, and widely advertised by tourism groups and tourism advertisers, the Tat shops might strive energetically to adjust their wares in order to earn one or more such crests for their front windows lest serious customers go elsewhere.
Is there no equivalent to the BBB in Scotland or the UK?
Of course, all the stamps of approval in the world still won't keep a clueless tourist from blowing money on junk. Such marks of quality/ethics are only as good as the effort that customers put into researching them.

I'm relatively new to this forum and I have felt this since day one here.

But as I've said elsewhere, you can't legislate intelligence . . . Some people just want to have a fun holiday and blow some money on cheap souvenirs. Sorry folks, but that's what they get.

I'm sure there is, but what I'm suggesting is that they have in their hands the tools to deal with the concerns expressed here... If they want to.

I am sorry that you feel this way. Every nation has something that "belongs" to it and Scotland, in general, is proud that others want to share that something that is unique to itself. What you must remember, however, is who originally defined that something. America has taken many things from around the world unto itself, most of which have been modified to suit the new place it is in. Kilts are no different and have been modified, sometimes out of any recognition, to suit their new environment. There is nothing wrong with this but you have to also understand the feelings and values of those who hold the original concept dear.

Phil is correct, however another note: the "possessive" comments come from a very few. That's their prerogative. It also reflects their own perspective, not necessarily the perspective of all Scots or of the whole world. Hang in there! I feel it too, but I'm learning to remember from how few it comes.

I am going to respectfully ask that this thread be kept on the topic of the OP.
That topic is the music and clutter ban on the streets of the Royal Mile.
If you wish to make comments on another topic please start your own thread.
But I wish everyone to remember....
This is a Kilt forum.
It is not a Scottish Forum. It is not a History Forum.
It is not a Traditional Highland Attire Forum. It is not a Modern Kilt Wear Forum.
This forum will welcome all who share our passion for the kilt. It will not matter if you wear your heirloom kilt only for special occasions with full highland regalia or if you wear an acrylic kilt to the pub with a t-shirt and sandals.
No one on this forum should have the right to tell another that they are wrong for wearing a kilt.
On this forum we welcome all those who choose to wear the kilt for whatever reason and in any way they feel comfortable.
And we keep our threads on topic.

Willie.
I wear the Kilt and I'm English. It rattles lots of cages both English and Scots.
I disregard the abuse and I keep wearing it because to me, it's clothes at the end of the day and I'm comfortable in my own skin. It is an awsomely comfortable, man's garment and I also think I wear it respectfully (more respectfully than some Scots I've seen) I maybe don't wear it in a completely orthodox fashion but I do think I'm helping to keep it alive.
Of the 17 Kilts I have (blimey!), 6 are custom-made. I'd like to think I'm doing my bit to preserve the art, to protect the woolen mills and to employ quality Kiltmakers. As I'm sure we would all like to do.
I really struggle to get my head around this dog in the manger approach so I will continue to wear the Kilt for as long as it pleases me.
Edit: And I don't like the tinny bagpipe music on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh... but I think I mentioned that already
(Cheers Steve. Point taken)

I find it strange that it's taken em this long to get a grip of it BUT saying that these traders i think wield quite a bit of clout with the council so get left alone(the race card can be played at any time yono0)

Sorry you never got to meet any of us during your visit to Scotland, nor to see the superb Perth Highland Games which sadly had to be cancelled this year due to the South Inch at Perth being waterlogged. Next year perhaps?
