Place to go in Scotland
I'm in Scotland for the next two days.... Dundee actually, and I wouldlike to visit a nice kilt shop. I've been in a couple, but they were very touristy... I'll be round about Dundee and perth today, and in Edinburgh tomorrow. Suggestions?

Yes The Royal Mile is loaded with tat shops.
But there are a few places with real Scottish-made things. Here are a couple of them (in 2007, don't know if they're still there)

Actually John Morrison is part of the Gold Bros Empire - would hesitate to recommend it. The next shop, Nicholsons is OK. To be honest though I would give the Royal Mile a miss altogether. Where I would recommend is Armstrongs in the Grassmarket. They always have a selection of used kilt stuff, and its the real thing.

Geoffrey (Tailor) is a little further down from Nicholsons and is recommended by many and frowned on by some.
Kinloch Anderson in Leith (Google for location) is the real deal but with prices to match.
Good luck,
Peter

Oops I didn't know that!! Thanks for the heads-up.
Geoffrey Tailor makes all their own kilts and jackets there in Scotland, do they not? I hope so.

Yes, Geoffrey Tailor make their own kilts (and weave their own cloth too I believe). Sorry I meant Geoffrey Tailor which is next to that dreadful Morrison shop. Nicholsons is further down the Royal Mile. I always recommend Stewart Christie - http://www.stewart-christie.com/ - who are the best I have found (from personal experience). They are also not the dearest.

I'm afraid so. That's why bespoke tailors are like hen's teeth nowadays. Nowadays that well known maxim applies - never mind the quality - feel the width. Never mind, like many other such labour-intensive things the work has gone east.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys!
I went all about today in Edinburgh... Geoffrey tailors is where I ended up getting some stuff.
I found out Friday at my sisters wedding that I'm terribly allergic to wool! The kilt I hired gave me terrible hive all over my legs. Needless to say, I ended up with 5 yards of colquhoun pv for a great kilt, and I'm very excited.
I hit so many shops, some full of tat and others no, that I can't remember half of them. The only place I didn't make it to that was disappointing was grassmarket. Too far out of the way fro the other activities of the day.
