Not helpful when the press refer to UK riots, this is an ENGLISH problem, there is NO rioting here in SCOTLAND, so no reason why visitors to Scotland should feel unsafe.
Rioting has boiled up before down south, it only ever seems to happen in summertime, perhaps the hotter weather further south makes a small minded criminal minority more bad tempered, while the vast majority of people are able to stay calm and rational in a heatwave.
I am confident that the vast majority of English people would agree with me that the small minority who commit rioting and looting should be rounded up and either imprisoned or made to repair the damage.

Here, here! My sentiments exactly Trefor. While not in my location we have witnessed this a few times in recent times in Los Angeles. I have no use for people who resort to these types of behaviors. I hope that there are some creative sentencing schemes for these low life, perhaps cleaning parks and other public area, painting and restoring damaged areas etc along with stiff financial penalties.

London is a city of 12 million people. Rioting is largely confined to areas I wouldn't care to visit, even mid-week in daylight. These areas exist across the world, in every major city. As for appropriate action - 7.62mm and brickwalls???

No excuse for such bandwagon, unruly, destructive behavior. Not surprising that they have organised themselves using Twitter/Facebook and some have even had the audacity to display their ill gotten gains on various social network sites to bite another thumb at the system. Should help to catch some of the scrotes anyway.
Makes you ashamed to be English! This vermin see everything as a free ride and expect the rest of the country to owe them a living. Those that are caught should have their state benefits, state pensions and free health care stopped for LIFE!
It's all rights without responsibility. A sign of the times and the result of tolerated ill-discipline and derision of authority figures for the last 30 bloody years. Monkey see, Monkey do, and when Mum and Dad don't give a stuff for the law and authority, why should the kids?
I listened to our Prime Minister's wise words on the TV tonight. Interesting to see our Members of Parliament rounding on the masses, eager to condemn with another new stable door "tough on crime" initiative when they have all been seen to be flagrantly looting the public purse recently. Fine example to our dysfunctional youth I must say...
We should round them all up and put 'em in the stocks! Then after a good, sound, public thrashing, transport them to the Colonies. And when we've done with them we should do the same to the rioters and looters.
Mmmmm... Can't see this post lasting long although I feel it's not a political statement but an observation and humourous poke at contemporary English society. Good to get it off my chest amongst friends though. Thanks for listening...
Anyway. Back to the picture threads.
No I don't read the Daily Mail... well not every day.

Sadly we don't have any colonies any longer (unless you read the Daily Telegraph whose readers still think we do have colonies, that is). And the former ones seem to be even more reactionary than us. Australia sends back all its sex offenders who happened to have been born in the UK (after convict transportation that is) and other former colonies now seem more obsequious to the hereditary Royals now that they, themselves, no longer have to "bend the knee" to someone set above them by a mere accident of birth.

Are you guys TRYING to get this thread locked?
I wasn't looking for political commentary. Just wanted to know if everyone in the affected areas was OK, and if they had any info as to what was going on that isn't in the news.

Just a reminder of Rule #5
- Discussions on the topics of religion and politics most often result in conflict between members. Posts which quote historical facts or historical events are acceptable. Discussions of the rightness or wrongness of, espousing one over another, perceptions of, or personal belief in, a religion or political system are not acceptable. Quite simply, check your religion and politics at the door before entering.
I read John's post earlier and was a bit uneasy with it. However it was probably written tongue in cheek and for the benefit of those living outwith Britain I should clarify that a few Westminster politicians from both Government and Opposition parties have equally been in trouble recently for fraudulent expenses claims so John's comment, sarcastically saying that the Members of Parliament are setting a fine example to dysfunctional youth, although it may seem highly political to some of our Members, is actually neutral to the Government and the Opposition as I see it. For this reason the Mods have so far turned a blind eye to John's post, but please note that if this leads into a political argument the thread will be locked.

If some of the looters are displaying ill gotten gains on sites like facebook, it makes it possible for police to track them down. We have had some wrongdoers in the US caught like that.
