Dressing like an Aussie!

I had the opportunity today do meet a guy that I consider "very famous", though I will acknowledge that many non-military or non-government types might never have heard of him. David Kilcullen is a former Australian Army officer who had quite a bit of experience in counter-insurgency prior to our current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. He used his experiences as a basis for his masters and doctorate theses/dissertations and managed to grab the attention of some very senior US military officers, General Petraeus being one of the main ones. Kilcullen's various published works on counter-insurgency and other related topics have made him quite famous and he is largely credited with being the basis of modern US counter-insurgency strategy.

OK...now that I've explained who he is...my real reason for posting is to share my observations about his attire. He was wearing a blue pinstripe suit...cut in a European/UK style with side vents, of course (rather than a single back vent as is the norm in American suits). His shirt was the quintessential shirt that we have discussed ad nauseum on this forum...white shirt with blue windowpane over-check, spread collar, no buttons of course (didn't get to see if it had a breast pocket or not). The thing that really struck me as odd was his footwear...he was wearing bluish-grey suede ankle boots (desert boots). I would say that they were rather a bit casual to be worn with a blue pinstripe suit by my standards...but in consideration of much that I've read posted by Jock Scot and other Scots on here...I guess I would place this into the category of "reach into the closet and pull out something you like and put it on." Yet further proof that we Americans put too much thought into planning our attire!!

Strange you should mention this longhuntr74, as in 2006 George Packer of the New Yorker had this to say about David Kilcullen in a profile piece.
"Kilcullen is thirty-nine years old, and has a wide pink face, a fondness for desert boots, and an Australian’s good-natured bluntness."

Not only do I know who he is, I've met him several times and admire his work. Well done!

Well then, I guess it would appear to be his standard footwear! I have a pair on my "wish list" (not because of Kilcullen...they've been there for a while). They appear to be a tremendously comfortable casual shoe to go well with everything from khakis/chinos to denim...but I wouldn't wear them with a suit...

I am familiar with his work.

Tan desert boots were a favorite of mine during the late '60's. I mainly wore them with Levis and khakis. A very comfortable shoe.
