That's an interesting question, one I haven't pondered until now. I definitely plan to order several kilts in tartan woven by Dalgliesh in the future, for example, a kilt in the Macpherson reproduction colours. Say I wanted to have a pair of fully-fashioned, Argyll style hose made up to match the Macpherson reproduction tartan by Dalgliesh, what would be the best way to do this?
The most obvious way to me, is to have Dalgliesh send on a swatch of the same tartan as in the kilt, then submit the Dalgliesh tartan swatch to the firm that makes my fully-fashioned, Argyll style hose, in order to "match" the colours the best way possible.
Kind regards,

Kyle,
I don't know where you have your hose made, so I can't comment on their practices, but I know the people who make the Argyle hose we sell through the museum shop dye their yarns in small batches specifically to match the colors of the tartan we submit to them. I won't say the colors are always a 100% match, but they do come durned close.

This is great, Nick!
Over the last few years, I've been saving a few of the threads from each of the kilts I've made in D.C.Dalgliesh tartan to be able to use in the future when ordering custom woven tartan from them. It's been helpful when a very particular shade of a color has been important to my customer.
Your new system will be a big help for getting the color as close as possible to the color one desires.
Thanks so much!

I just received a set of threads from you and I can't be happier with the communication and the materials. Once the other folks get their checks submitted I'll be ready to place my order.
Thanks again for this service, Nick.

Wonderful! Thanks, Matt. My hose are made by Kenneth Short, via Kinloch-Anderson.

Kind regards,
I just sent a swatch of the Lochcarron weathered Gunn of my new kilt (!!!) to my mum in NZ- I am trusting her to match the colours to the wool for my new Argyle hose (being made by a sock-maker she knows- the lady that made my beautiful bottle-green hose). Last time she chose the most gorgeous wool- merino/alpaca/possum blend! I don't really mind if the colours aren't EXACTLY the same... But sending the swatch ensures that overall at least the hose will "match".
(pics to come...)
Cheers,
Michael
