How to break the news to my wife?
Now I've gone and done it. Last night on my way home from work I stopped and looked at another motorcycle. Well, by "stopped and looked", I mean I bought it.
Hope she doesn't go out to the barn anytime before I tell her.
It's a 1981 Yamaha XS650 in pretty good shape. Took it for a drive last night and liked it. $500 bucks.
I wish I believed in reincarnation. Where's Charles Martel when you need him?

You could have bought a kilt instead!
Good luck!

Its an investment. You are going to clean it up and tune it and sell it for twice what you bought it. It might take a few years and you'll drop a couple grand working on it, but its an investment.

The funny part is, it really could be an investment. These bikes still have quite a following, even after being discontinued for about 25 years. The XS I bought gave way to the Virago (had one of those, too) which has given way to the V-Star lineup. Their thrust/weight ratio makes them quicker than bikes with far more engine displacement.
Other than faded paint and a loose turn signal up front, it's in pretty good shape. Needs a tune-up and carb adjustments, but that's normal for a bike that's been sitting for a few years.
My plan is to fix it up enough to ride back and forth to work when the weather permits for a few years, then sell it toward what I really want, one of the V-Star cruisers.
BTW, I appreciate the offer, BibleMonkey. I'll PM you if I have to take you up on it! Of course, you'd do the work since i won't have easy access to it, right?

Any possible way of convincing her someone must have stashed it there?

What if you took it apart and hid the pieces all over your barn, then happen to "find" a piece at a time, while she's out there with you, of course. You could say, "My, oh my, looky here what somebody done gone and put rat cheer in our barn. I wonder if there's any more pieces buried out here." By the time you find enough of it to start putting the bike (back) together, she'll see how smart you are and come purring up beside you and bat her eyelashes and say, "Please, let's go for a ride," and then, my friend, you'll be a hero.
That's how it's done.

My husband bought his motorcycle without telling me and he didn't get in trouble, so you might be OK. But he'd been talking about getting one for a year.
One day it just showed up.
I just took this as an excuse for me to buy new motorcycle boots.
No, I don't ride, I just like new footwear.

I'm sorry. I must take my line from your wife's perspective... Anyone who will fritter away 300 quid ($500) on such a non essential item deserves nothing but scorn. (hemhem)
I've learned my lessons the hard way and statements such as, "Darling, but it's a special kilt [or bike or whatever]... It's as rare as hen's teeth, it's almost unique and I simply had to have it. Errr... No really, it was a bargain, believe me!" Well... it simply won't wash.
You should have seen the doo-doo I was in when I bought my custom weave Bruce Hunting ... Not to mention a number of other Kilts since which were also clearly non essential.
Fortunately, she's over it now...

Bruce Hunting... nearly cost me considerably more than I bargained for.
