What To Wear?

Thank you gentlemen for your comments. Since the only Argyle jacket I have is black Barathea wool and might be a little too formal, and the tweed jacket is the one I wear every week I was thinking that I do have a navy blue suit jacket with black buttons that I had cut down to a kilt jacket that I have worn to funerals and to more somber church services like Good Friday Mass this past April. Also one member of my congregation mentioned that he too will be kilted and wearing appropriate military decorations.

If I may...

While the Argyle may be a bit too formal for the service, if you're intending to wear miniature medals, I'd stay with the Argyle. Miniatures are normally reserved for evening formal functions where the dress code is dress mess or civilian equivalent, i.e. black tie. Might look a bit out of place in a converted jacket.

I'm a retired Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant, and I'd feel perfectly at ease wearing what you've proposed. Sounds like proper attire for a memorial. An Argyle with miniature medals isn't too far removed from the dress uniform, which would be 100% appropriate for such an occasion.

***. Unless I wore the kilt as everyday dress I, personally, wouldn't wear it to this kind of service. YMMV, but I just don't see any reasonable nexus between the Scottish Highlands and a memorial service for those who died in 9/11. I think it would draw attention to you and away from the purpose of the memorial.

Yes, as you wear the kilt to Mass every Sunday, do as David suggests, and wear it as per normal. Please save the miniature medals, though, for evening black or white tie events, and not for day wear.
