    Hoot Mon......

Remember back last fall, someone (I've forgotten) at Tom's posted a story about having been called "Hoot Mon" and wasn't sure if they should feel complimented or insulted. It sort of jogged my memory on that when I stumbled on this link the other day.

    Thought it was intersting.

    Hoot mon

My inference was always that it was some sort of greeting, like "hello, you / hey, man", but then I heard a Scottish guy say: "Hoot mon, the loo" and was totally confused. Looking back, I think he said it upon entering the pub...so I think he was saying "hey, guys, I need to pee."

I think that was me who posted the story.

I was at the mall wearing my utilikilt and a guy walked up to me and exclaimed "Hoot Mon!" My only real problem was that I had never heard this expression and didn't know what the heck he was trying to say.

So Chance...did you resolve the meaning of the expression? In the end I would presume the remark was simply meant as an acknowledgement of the highland attire. (perhaps a reference to a piece of music.)

"Hoots Mon" doesn't really mean anything - tne nearest approximation would possibly be "Hey there".

It's actually a slightly derogatory expression much used by non-Scots when attempting to be "funny" in conversation with Scots, so I suspect he was assuming your attire indicated you were Scottish.

    Hi Robbie

A long, long time since we've exchanged a word. Good to see you here.

We on the wrong side of the border (!) believe 'hoots man' means 'listen up' or 'shut up and listen to me'.
